A rare species of syzygium originating from Southeast Asia, especially from the island of Java. This tree belongs to the same genus as the clove and stands out not only for its ornamental value, but also for its tasty fruits, which grow in an unusual way directly on the trunk and stronger branches – the so-called cauliflories, similar to Jaboticaba.
The fruits of the gowok are round, about 3 cm in size, wine-red to almost black. Inside they hide a white juicy pulp with a sweet and sour taste. However, young leaves and shoots are also valued and are used as vegetables. New sprouting leaves change color from pink-purple to green, which gives the plant an attractive appearance all year round.
The plant begins to bloom and bear fruit relatively early, at the age of 3–5 years. In our conditions, gowok is grown as a houseplant or portable plant. It thrives best in a bright location without direct summer sun, it appreciates regular watering and higher humidity, so it is advisable to occasionally refresh the plant with dew.
In addition to its tasty fruits, gowok is also valued in traditional medicine. It is used to treat sore throats, bronchitis, asthma, thirst, dysentery or stomach ulcers, and the leaves and fruits are used to prepare medicinal decoctions.
Gowok is not only an interesting fruit tree, but also a beautiful decoration. It boasts huge, beautifully ribbed leaves that will add an exotic touch to your living room or winter garden. Its exotic appearance, practical use in the kitchen and, in addition, traditional medicinal effects, make it a real gem among tropical plants.
