Jaboticaba (read jabotikaba) is a tropical fruit plant native to Brazil, where it is valued for its unique fruits and unusual way of growing. This tree, also known as the "grape tree", impresses with its round, dark purple to black fruits that grow directly on the trunk and branches, giving it a unique appearance reminiscent of a natural jewel.
Jaboticaba fruits are delicious and refreshing. Beneath the firm skin is a juicy, jelly-like flesh, the color of which varies depending on the variety. The taste is sweet with subtle notes of grapes and lychee. Because the fresh fruits perish quickly, they are rarely available in regular stores and are most often eaten directly from the tree or processed into juices, jams and wine.
Jaboticaba blooms several times a year, and flowers and fruits of different stages can often be seen on the tree at the same time. In European conditions, it can be successfully grown in a pot and, with proper care, can begin to bear fruit between 3 and 10 years, depending on the variety.
If you were to ask experienced jaboticab growers which strain they would choose if they could only grow one, most would say Red Hybrid without hesitation. And no wonder! This bred variety produces larger, tastier fruits and also bears fruit around the fourth year, which is significantly earlier than common varieties that take their time and bear fruit in six to eight years.
Its dark red fruits, up to 3 cm in size, are not only beautiful, but also exceptionally tasty. In addition, the compact size of Red Hybrid makes it perfect for growing in a pot. If you want to combine the joy of growing with a quick result, this variety will certainly not disappoint you!
