Feichoa -Acca sellowiana – an exotic plant with delicious fruits
The feijoa, also known as the edible, is an evergreen shrub or smaller tree native to South America. Here it grows to a height of around 2 meters and is valued not only for its tasty fruits, but also for its attractive flowers. These are bisexual, up to 3 cm in size, which are edible and sweet. The fruits are ovoid to oval in shape, grow 2–7 cm in length and weigh 35–100 g, have soft, juicy flesh with small seeds. The taste resembles a combination of strawberries and pineapple and pear.
The plant is undemanding and suitable even for beginners. It requires a sunny location, ideally oriented to the south. During the summer it can be grown outdoors, for the winter it must be transferred to a cool and bright room. Young plants must be protected from frost, older ones can withstand temperatures down to -10 °C. A drop in temperature to the freezing point in winter is needed for fruit set. The dressing should be abundant in the summer months, but in the winter it will be limited. Lack of water can cause leaf and fruit drop.
Feichoa begins to bear fruit after three years. Fruits are rich in vitamins C and B, fiber, minerals, folic acid and iodine, which makes them suitable even for pregnant women. They contain a low amount of fat and a higher proportion of carbohydrates. The seeds from the fruit are used in cosmetics as a natural peeling.
