Garcinia humilis, also known as Achachairú or simply Achacha, is a tropical slow-growing, evergreen tree native to the lowlands of Bolivia. This tree is popular for its orange-yellow fruits that combine sweet flavors, reminiscent of a mixture of mangosteen and citrus.
The fruits of Achachairú are round and covered with a thick skin, which acquires a red-orange color when ripe and emits a pleasant aroma. The white flesh inside is sweet, tender and very tasty, with a unique combination of flavors similar to mangosteen. The fruit can be eaten fresh, processed into juices or used in desserts and refreshing summer drinks. Each fruit contains one to two seeds.
Achachairú thrives in warm, humid climates and prefers well-drained, fertile soil. It requires regular watering, especially during the fruiting period, and a sheltered site from strong winds. This tree is relatively low maintenance, making it an ideal choice for home gardens. Trees usually begin to bear fruit after 6 years of growth. The maximum height of the tree reaches 3-7 meters in the ground, around 150 cm in a pot, which allows it to be grown even in smaller spaces.
In addition to fresh consumption, the fruit is used to produce highly valued honey, which is sought after for its medicinal properties. This tree, with its honey-sweet fruit, which means "honey kiss" in the Guarani language, is an exceptional tropical treasure.
