Annona reticulata 'Red Laos', also known as bull's heart, is a tropical tree that stands out for its delicious fruits with a soft, creamy taste reminiscent of strawberries and cream. This cultivar was imported from Laos, where it grows in the ground about 3 m high. When growing in containers, we can keep the plants very easily by cutting them to a size of up to 150 cm. It is relatively low maintenance if it has a regular supply of water, organic soil, mulching and fertilizing, especially during prolonged drought.
The custard apple tree blooms with fragrant, inconspicuous flowers that hang in drooping clusters. Fruits are 10–15 cm in diameter and can be round, heart-shaped or irregular. Their thin, hard skin is red in color. The flesh is thick, creamy white with a custard texture, while redder fruits may have a pink tinge and fine red veins.
This versatile fruit is rich in antioxidants and important nutrients such as vitamin C, B-complex, magnesium, iron and phosphorus. Thanks to its high fiber content, it contributes to healthy digestion and supports overall health. An adult tree can produce up to 15-20 fruits per season. In colder regions, it can also be grown in a container, but in winter it is necessary to protect it from frost.
This exotic tree is not only an attractive addition to the garden, but also a source of nutritious and tasty fruits. With proper care, Annona reticulata 'Red Laos' will reward you with a rich harvest and a unique taste experience.
